A talk by Kent Julian, a leadership trainer and motivational speaker had the key message that our response to life events often play a bigger role in the outcome than the event itself. This idea expressed as a formula is: Event + Response = Outcome.
In the current COVID-19 pandemic, responses from the government, businesses and individuals will all have an effect on the outcome. ALL of us have a part to play. Some of us will be in the background, some in the foreground and some completely off stage but we have a role nonetheless.
The healthcare workers in society are on the foreground in this battle against a deadly virus but they have to be supported by the rest of society to do an effective job. It is so heartwarming to see the gratitude shown to NHS staff in the society with many businesses offering them free or discounted products and services.
Many others are in the background, supporting and enabling the work of the clinical staff to be effective. The different functions within the healthcare, utilities, education, food and necessary goods, security and transport industries. Not to mention their suppliers and subcontractors – the list could be endless.
There is power in collaboration, when everyone works together – we have a greater chance of a better outcome. COVID 19 may have brought huge revenue loss, prompted you to work differently; or caused you to rethink your business model entirely. These are uncertain times but there is light at the end of the tunnel. In the meantime, remember that you matter and your response to the crisis matters.
